With fall just around the corner, there will undoubtedly be an increase in the number of children wheezing and coughing. As a parent, many of you might have wondered, "Could this persistent cough mean that my child might have asthma"? Approximately 1 in 7 children do have some degree of asthma which totals more than 4 million kids here in the US. Because asthma is such a very large and complex topic to discuss, we have decided to split it up and discuss it as a 2-part series over the next two newsletters. In this first article we will discuss the symptoms of asthma, the differences between asthma and reactive airway disease, as well as the potential triggers for an asthma exacerbation. In next month's newsletter, we will discuss the classification of asthma severity and the many medications available for the treatment of asthma.

The May 2008 edition of Parkside News is all about VACCINES! When it comes to vaccines, it is tough to know who and what to believe. We are bombarded on the TV, newspaper, and Internet by terrifying stories of vaccines causing autism. Many of you ask,"Should I trust what Oprah has to say about vaccines?" "...what about Larry King? I saw Jenny McCarthy on his show and the vaccines caused problems for her child..." We discuss and advise our patients/families about vaccines on a daily basis and consider ourselves to be experts on vaccines. It is our firm belief that vaccines:
- Do what they are designed to do--PREVENT DISEASE!
- Are Safe--Vaccines are one of the most highly regulated and studied industries in the world.
Below is a statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding autism and vaccine safety. It is our hope that by sharing this information with you, we can help to separate some of the facts from the fiction that we too often hear in the popular media.

What comes to mind when you hear about a child that bites another child? It probably depends upon whether your child is the one who was bitten or if your child was the "biter". The parent of the child who has been bitten is usually upset and possibly worried about the risk of infection. Often the parent of the biter is worried about how their child will be treated and if he will be labeled as a "biter". Often, if biting happens in the day care setting, the other parents may want the biter to be disciplined or expelled. Parents need to remember that biting is a normal part of childhood and occasional biting offences are to be expected.
