What is the VFC - Vaccines for Children Program?
VFC is a state funded program that pays for vaccines for children whose insurance does not cover vaccines at all. It also pays for those children who are underinsured which means their insurance policy only covers a portion of the cost of vaccines. Currently, the VFC program pays for whatever portion or cost was not covered.
Why is funding for vaccines through the VFC program changing?
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will change the current coverage for the state program known as Vaccines for Children (VFC). This change in coverage is due to an increase in the cost of vaccines and the decrease in funds available for vaccines from the state and federal government.
When will the funding change?
July 1, 2011 If your insurance does not cover vaccines or only covers a portion of the cost then starting July 1, you will be responsible for the amount not covered.
Will I have to pay for vaccines?
1.Depending on your insurance policy, you could be responsible for some or all of the cost of your child's vaccines. If your insurance plan only covers a part of the cost of vaccines or does not cover vaccines at all, you will then be responsible for any portion not covered by your insurance policy.
2.You child's vaccines will be covered in full if:
a.Your private insurance covers vaccines at 100%
b.Your child has Medicaid
c.Your child is American Indian or Alaskan Native
What do I need to do?
We encourage you to talk with the Human Resources department at your employer to determine your exact coverage and find out if there is a different plan that would provide full or better coverage for vaccines. The health department will continue to offer underinsured children vaccines required to attend school or day care.
